Delay hits Rudd's $8bn fibre network
KEVIN Rudd's ambitious plan to help fund an $8 billion national broadband network has been hit by a delay of at least four months because of a longer than expected timeframe for confirming an expert panel and pressure from telecoms companies to extend the process.
The Government, which will tip $4.7 billion of taxpayer funds into the broadband network, originally pushed to finalise the project by June or July.
A new timetable for the fibre-to-the-node network, intended to reach 98 per cent of Australian homes, will be outlined when Communications Minister Stephen Conroy names an expert panel to advise the Government on the network. The announcement may be as early as today.

FIFTEEN Australian IT companies will showcase their wares to venture capitalists and Microsoft executives at the software giant's Seattle headquarters thanks to the Australian Trade Commission.
The local companies, all financial services technology players, will take part in a three-day Austrade-led trade mission in early June to Microsoft's headquarters.
"This is the first delegation of Australian financial services technology and solution providers to Microsoft's headquarters and provides networking opportunities for Australian firms to align or gain exposure to US technology companies," Austrade ICT exporter services industry group national manager Peter Harrison said.
Microsoft Australia will help Austrade navigate the corridors of power at Redmond by organising meetings and networking opportunities.
Important Changes to the .AU domain
On 4 March 2008, Australia's Internet domain authority, auDA, has confirmed it will remove the ban on advertising and selling Australia's dot.au domain names but has added some conditions to prevent a land rush situation to arise.
auDA will not allow domain names to be registered solely for the purpose of putting them up for sale later, and will require that they be in possession for a period of six months or more before it can be made available for sale. The man who recorded the famous “Tonight on Nine” voice-over for Channel Nine was killed in a traffic accident in Woombye last night – but mystery surrounds why he was there in the first place.
Radio and television personality Steve Andrews died after he was hit by a car on a lonely stretch of Nambour Connection Road about 300 metres south of McKenzies Road about 7.30pm.

Aussie firms stay away from CeBIT PLAYING spot-the-Aussie at Germany's giant CeBIT technology show last week was an almost fruitless exercise.
Among more than 5800 CeBIT exhibitors, there were just five local companies showing off their wares, the lowest Australian attendance ever.

The best supplier categories in the ERAs are voted on by a judging panel representing all major retail groups from all over Australia including Retravision, Betta Electrical, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman and NARTA members.

Origin of the name

SYDNEY: Nintendo has launched its latest Wii game – Wii Fit – in a push to create a fitter, slimmer gamer.
The game allows users to perform more than 40 exercises across four categories – yoga, muscle workouts, aerobic activities and balance games. Many of the activities use the new Wii Balance Board to help gamers use their muscles.
The Balance Board apparently allows the Wii to calculate an accurate Body Mass Index (BMI) and determine a person’s centre of gravity. The combined results become what Nintendo calls a person’s “Wii Fit Age”.
Muscle workouts include torso twists, arm and leg lifts, rowing squats and games such as a push-up challenge.
Aerobic activities include ‘super hula hoop’, advanced step, rhythm boxing and a basic running exercise.
Yoga activities work on deep breathing, and include poses such as tree, sun salutation and half moon (no jokes intended).
Finally, customers can use the Balance Board for games such ski jump, soccer heading, tightrope walk and bubble balance.
The Balance Board can also be used to play the included snowboarding games in a much more realistic manner than previously possible.
Players can unlock additional exercises as they progress through the game.
During exercises, the Balance Board gauges exactly where a player’s balance and body mass are placed, allowing the on-screen instructor to coach you correctly. Customers can also monitor their progress, as up to eight people can store and compare their Wii Fit data. Wii Fit also comes with the Wii Fit Channel, which gives players quick access to their daily progress.
Wii Fit retails for $149.95. and is due for release May 8th 2008

SYDNEY: GfK data has uncovered the leading five computer suppliers in 2007 who will now compete for the Electrical Retailing Awards (ERA) Best Computer Supplier title as voted by a panel of Australia’s leading retailers.
The five finalists for the ERA Best Computer Supplier, selected on the basis of their total sales volume in the category (as measured by GfK) and listed in alphabetical order are: Acer, Apple, Compaq, HP and Toshiba.
Toshiba is the defending category winner, having won the category at last year’s ERAs.
The criteria retailers are voting on are: Design/appearance and innovation; Profitability/margin; Promotional/advertising support; sales representation and service backup; and Sales growth to category.
