eBay Australia passes 10-year mark
On Friday eBay Australia marks its 10th anniversary Down Under, having sold more than 173 million items at a rate of one item every 1.8 seconds.
The site has gravitated from an auction-based collectables seller to an online shopping mecca, now contributing about $2.6 billion to Australia’s GDP, eBay Australia says.
More than 52,700 Australians now make a primary or secondary income out of eBay, while 5.79 million unique visitors were recorded in September this year.
The site now has eight million registered users, up from 9000 in 1999.

Apparently, the issue arises when a Mac user logs into the Snow Leopard Guest account, then tries to log back into a regular account.
They can be met with a completely empty account. Unless they have a backup, the data is gone.

Gadget warns online traders of dud decisions
called an EmoBracelet, measures electrical signals from users’ skin to assess their emotional state. The technology is similar to a lie detector recognising the nervousness behind a fib.
The EmoBracelet and another device, an EmoBowl, use electrical displays to show a person’s emotional intensity. The two items were designed to warn traders to step back and take a breather by alerting them to their heightened emotional state.
As a wearer’s emotions grow more intense, lights flicker faster on the bracelet and the colours inside the bowl change from a soft yellow to orange to a deep cautionary red.

Britain’s Prince Philip says he is baffled by modern television remote controls and ends up lying on the floor by the set to operate it instead.
“So you ended up lying on the floor with a torch in your teeth, a magnifying glass and an instruction book.
“I think people are very tolerant, the way they go on tolerating these ghastly things,” the 88-year-old said, before laying into television set design.

The Welfare Rights Centre says it is concerned over plans to track purchases made with welfare money, claiming it would be an invasion of privacy.
The Federal Government is considering implementing a system that would see welfare spending monitored through the use of debit cards.
The cards would only allow people to buy certain products, such as food and household goods.
Centre director Maree O’Halloran says that while the proposed system has some benefits, there is a risk of people losing their freedom.
“We are concerned that underlying this better, innovative way of collecting information, there could be the possibility of tracking the lifestyles of people who receive social security payments and making judgments about how they use their money and surveilling what they do,” Ms O’Halloran said.

According to the News Corporation Chairman, the so-called “aggregators” on the internet steal content from traditional media organisations and, he says, the time has come for them to pay for it.
“If we do not take advantage of the current movement toward paid-for content, it will be the content creators – the people in this hall – who will pay the ultimate price and the content kleptomaniacs will triumph,” he said.
