Facebook unveils ‘Here Together’ campaign in Australia
Facebook has launched an eight-week marketing campaign targeted at Australian consumers.
The move comes after more than 310,000 Australians may have had their data improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica, according to a Facebook update in April.
As part of a broader communications campaign, ‘Here Together’ has been launched today to drive awareness of the changes Facebook has made to protect people’s privacy, remove fake accounts from the platform and ensure people have a positive experience using the platform.
“It’s our responsibility to make sure Facebook is a place where everyone can stay closer with the people they care about, and to make sure it’s a positive force in the world.
“We hope this campaign will show that we take our responsibility seriously, and are working to improve Facebook for everyone in a way that enables communities to build and flourish,” facebook said
Microsoft unveils 10-inch Surface Go
Microsoft has officially launched the 10-inch Surface Go into 21 markets around the world, following weeks of leaks and speculation around its new device.
The smaller device will also be the cheapest Surface at $599, compared to the Surface Pro, which starts at $1199.
The wifi-only model will is available for preorders in Australia, New Zealand and 19 other countries in North America and Europe, and will hit shelves starting 2 August. An LTE model is also set to arrive later this year.
the Surface Go is powered by a 7th generation dual-core Intel Pentium Gold processor and a 64GB eMMC solid-state drive in a fanless design. Microsoft claims battery life is up to 9 hours.
It also comes with 8 megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras with Windows Hello to enable signing in using face recognition. A new Type Cover will be available for sale separately, although the full-sized covers are also compatible.

PayPal told customer her death breached its rules
The firm has since acknowledged that the letter was “insensitive”, apologised to her widower, and begun an inquiry into how it came to be sent.
PayPal was informed of Mrs Durdle’s death by her husband Howard Durdle.
He provided the online payments service with copies of her death certificate, her will and his ID, as requested.
He has now received a letter addressed in her name, sent to his home in Bucklebury, West Berkshire.
It was headlined: “Important: You should read this notice carefully.”
It said that Mrs Durdle owed the company about £3,200 and went on to say: “You are in breach of condition 15.4(c) of your agreement with PayPal Credit as we have received notice that you are deceased… this breach is not capable of remedy.”
Mr Durdle said a member of PayPal’s staff had told him there were three possible explanations:
- a bug
- a bad letter template
- human error
He added that he had been assured that whatever the cause, it would be addressed, although PayPal had told him it would not be able to share the information because it was an “internal matter”.

Twitter ‘shuts down millions of fake accounts’
The suspensions and shutdowns were part of a concerted effort by Twitter to clear up the platform
Many of the accounts are thought to be used by trolls or remotely controlled bots that abuse the service.
Juan Guzman, a researcher at UCL who has exposed hundreds of thousands of bots on social media, said Twitter had neglected tackling automatic tweet generators for years.
“Until recently, Twitter did not think bots were a problem on its platform and did not lead a strong bot-detection effort,” he told the BBC.
Xiaomi’s trading debut in Hong Kong
The world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker raised $4.7bn (£3.5bn) – just over half the target it had hoped for – valuing the company at $54bn.
As the first of many Chinese tech firms to list in Hong Kong in 2018, it marks a disappointing start for the sector.
Xiaomi’s trading debut was the biggest technology share sale since tech giant Alibaba raised $25bn in 2014.
Outside its home market in China, Xiaomi is a major player in India where it rivals Samsung as the most the popular handset maker.
Last year, Xiaomi moved into the Spanish market and reports suggest it is also looking to get into the US to take on Apple.
While smartphones make up 70% of Xiaomi’s revenue, its fastest-growing division focuses on internet-connected home appliances and gadgets, including air purifiers and rice cookers.
shares in Xiaomi, the firm often called China’s Apple, fell from HK$17 to as low as HK$16 in the first hour of trade, although the price recovered to close at HK$16.80.

– So how does it work? Well Google is launching a new Copyright Match tool that can flag instances of videos that match the contents that were created by the creators’ original videos.
– This Copyright Matching tool can flag all instances of videos that you request that match the content creators’ original videos.
– If your YouTube channel is eligible to use this tool, you will find it in the YouTube Studio. You will find a Matches tab will show you any similar videos that YouTube’s new tool has identified.
– The creators can then message the offending channel, request a removal or they can just archive it not take any action.
– YouTube reminds the creators that just because they find a match it doesn’t mean it’s automatically copyright infringement…. it could be “fair use, fair dealing or a similar exception to copyright” and therefore allowed to be posted by someone other than you.

– While McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research team was looking into dark web marketplaces.
– The team found a number of dark web shops were offering stolen access to various companies’ and some groups’ systems.
– In one shop McAfee Advanced Threat Research team found access to an airport’s security systems as well as its building automation, surveillance and transit systems.
– This particular shop was selling access to the airport’s remote desktop protocol (RDP), which gives employees remote access to certain computers on the airport’s network.
– McAfee said that it also came across access to lots of government systems,” some of which were linked to the US, as well as “dozens of connections that were linked to health care institutions.
– For security reasons, McAfee didn’t name the airport or any other entities that it found access to in its search, but it notified them of the breaches.

• The amount of video consumers watch on their mobile devices is growing at an extraordinary rate.
• Telstra says thier network has grown three fold since 2016 and on any given weekend, Australian sports fans consume 37 million minutes of live content over Telstra’s AFL, NRL and Netball apps.
• To cope with the increased demand, and the strain the network, Telstra has switched on (LTE-B) which is Australia’s first LTE-Broadcast network technology.
• The way LTE-Broadcast works is that it sends content via a single stream of data to many mobile users in the one area at once. The way it works now is that individual content streams of data are sent to each individual device, which means video quality will degrade the more users join the network.
• Think of it like LTE sends data to every user at a time on the network and LTE-B sends data to multiple users in one area or node at a time on the network. Conventional LTE transmissions aren’t going away, but LTE-B will help Telstra cope with “flash traffic” or in other words a large number of people watching the same thing at once in the same area, without having to build excess capacity for the network in that area.
• Phones that have LTE-B at the moment are Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9.
