GLENN’S SHOWNOTES

Since deciding to waive operating system fees for all devices with screens smaller than 9 inches, 50 new manufacturers have joined its partner program
The company announced the plan to drop OS licensing fees on phones and tablets at its Build conference back in April.
The move has meant Windows Phone is now cheaper for manufacturers to use than Android.

Manufacturers can be refused a licence if they do not meet Google’s requirements. Google does not charge for a GMS licence, but any company producing an Android device will need a certificate from an authorised testing facility in order to apply for the licence. That often incurs fees.
One source told the Guardian that the fee varies and is negotiated on a case-by-case basis, with one example costing $40,000 for a batch of at least 30,000 devices. A separate source said that in another deal, a testing facility quoted $75,000 to test 100,000 devices.

The Insider Program terms of use that cover the Windows 10 preview states Microsoft “may automatically collect and transmit data” to itself and partners about your activity in the OS and personal information including “interface interactions, and feature and application usage, including third party applications”.
The Windows Tech Preview privacy statement gives a little more detail on what these terms mean. “When you… use voice input features like speech-to-text, we may collect voice information and use it for purposes such as improving speech processing.”

“When you… enter text, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spellcheck features,” it adds.

Other data users agree to Microsoft collecting include their interests, for the purposes of delivering “more relevant” ads, as well as browsing and search history, and phone call and SMS data.

What’s more, it’s not only Microsoft that can get access to this information, but also unspecified “partners” to “improve how their products and services work with Microsoft’s products and services”.
If you’re using Windows 10 and are worried about your privacy, withdrawing from the program will stop further data collection, but Microsoft won’t delete what it’s already gathered.

OS X Yosemite’s public beta — the sneak peek Apple launched on July 24 — collects a variety of data from users who download and install the preview.

“In order to test and improve Apple’s products and services, and unless you opt out as set forth below, you acknowledge that Apple and its subsidiaries and agents will be collecting, using, storing, processing and analyzing (collectively, ‘Collecting’) diagnostic, technical, usage, and/or related information from your computers that are running pre-release versions of OS X as part of this Beta Program,” Apple states in the preview’s program agreement (download PDF).

a cryptic invitation sent to reporters and analysts simply said: “It’s been way too long.”

This is the time of the year that Apple typically releases its latest products to cash in on the holiday shopping season.

The company’s last tablet, the iPad Air, came out nearly a year ago.

Although it’s Apple’s sleekest tablet yet, the iPad Air hasn’t proven compelling enough to accelerate the company’s tablet sales.

After a solid performance in last year’s holiday shopping season, Apple’s iPads have faltered.

Since the first model was released in April 2010, Apple has sold more than 225 million iPads. Many people are still using iPads that they bought several years ago
