Telstra brings world’s first 600Mbps device to Australia

The Telstra WiFi 4GX Advanced III Mobile Broadband Hotspot, manufactured in partnership with Netgear, Ericsson and Qualcomm, is the world’s first 4G LTE Advanced Category 11 device. The telco said that the improvements in its mobile network to support Cat 11 gear is “really designed to boost network capacity”.

“Speed is all about the overall network, not just an individual user,” Telstra networks general managing director Mike Wright told a briefing today in Sydney.

At the press event, Telstra staff performed a live demonstration showing actual download speeds going up to 503Mbps. In a video, a speed of over 440Mbps was recorded outdoors in the western Sydney suburb of Harris Park.

The new 4GX hotspot device connects up to 15 wi-fi-enabled devices simultaneously, according to the telco, and boasts 11 hours of continuous use on a full charge of its battery.

The access point will be available in stores from 29 September.

“The early Cat 11 enabled footprint is concentrated on the CBDs of eastern seaboard capital cities, initially Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, and in selected popular holiday locations,” announced Telstra. “The network reach supporting these Cat 11 speeds will also continue to expand in line with growing mobile data demand.”

Telstra claims Aussie first with 4G voice calls

Telstra networks general managing director Mike Wright called the change “one of the largest and most complex changes to voice calling” in more than 40 years.

“VoLTE is the next generation of how voice calls are carried over our network. In those 4G areas where VoLTE has been enabled, when customers make a voice call on a VoLTE enabled handset, the call is integrated into the 4G LTE data stream rather than the previous arrangement of reverting back to 3G,” said Wright.

“This means voice and data stay on the same part of the network, therefore delivering faster data access while using the internet as well as super-fast call set up times.”

Upon today’s launch the Samsung Note 5 and the S6 Edge 6+ were the only handsets enabled for VoLTE,

Wright wrote on a Telstra blog that Apple’s newly launched iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus would also be “among the first [VoLTE] enabled devices”.

H8Snow confirmed to 9to5Mac that the jailbreak will work on iOS 9.1 beta, as well, and although it’s “dirty and hacky”, the jailbreak is a “proper” one. He also said his jailbreak software wouldn’t be published, although others might release something similar.

Microsoft has revealed that Office 2016 will launch on 22 September

Office 365 Personal and Office 365 Home users will be able to download individual apps on 22 September, with automatic updates to start rolling out in October.

Users on volume licences will be able to download the new version from the Volume Licensing Service Centre on 1 October.

Apple pulls release of flawed Apple Watch operating system hours before global release

APPLE has delayed the release of its major software update for the Apple Watch just hours before it was due for global release with reports of a software bug killing the watch’s battery life.

Apple was due to release watchOS 2 for the Apple Watch as part of iOS9, the mobile operating system that is being rolled out around the world today.

But just hours before the iOS9 update went live, Apple pulled the watch software update. The last-minute decision followed reports from app developers testing almost-finished released versions of the software that the operating system update was causing dramatic battery drain.

One software developer, Kharis O’Connell, described the final beta version of operating system called “abysmal” and “defo (sic) not ready for prime time).

Although after he repaired it to his iPhone, he remarked there was “crazy good battery” life in a tale of two extremes.

O’Connel is an app developer for Vancouver-based CommandWear, which makes a communication app for emergency first responders.

Apple released a statement at 1am AEST about the delayed software release: “We have discovered a bug in development of watchOS 2 that is taking a bit longer to fix than we expected. We will not release watchOS 2 today but will shortly.”

Apple announced the release of the new operating system back at its WWDC conference in June. The update also featured prominently in the “monster” Apple event of last week in which the Cupertino-based technology giant announced two new iPhones, a new giant iPad and a revamped iPad Pro.

During the event in San Francisco last week, Apple announced the Watch update would be available on September 16. By 4pm Wednesday AEST, the watchOS 2 page on the Apple website was updated to say “coming soon”.

The announcement of the delay for the software was issued just hours after Apple CEO Tim Cook made a high-profile appearnas on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Some software developers, who claimed to be testing final beta versions of the operating system, took to social media to complain the update was draining the battery of their Apple Watch.

Apple Releases iOS 9 With Proactive Siri and Search, iPad Split-Screen Multitasking, Transit Directions, and More

Apple today released iOS 9 to the public, making the download available to all users who have an iPhone 4s or later, iPad 2 or later, 5th-generation iPod touch or later, or any iPad mini. The update can be downloaded through iTunes or over-the-air by going to the Settings app and tapping General –> Software Update.

As with all major software updates, it may take a few minutes for the update to propagate to all users due to high demand. Some users are seeing “Software Update Failed” messages and may have better luck installing via iTunes.

Public beta testers who have the iOS 9 golden master installed will receive the release version of iOS 9 over-the-air.

iOS 9 builds on content introduced with iOS 8, bringing subtle design changes, refined features, improved functionality, and performance enhancements. From Apple’s release notes:

With this update your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch become more intelligent and proactive with powerful search and improved Siri features. New multitasking features for iPad allow you to work with two apps simultaneously, side-by-side or with the new Picture-in-Picture feature. And, built-in apps become more powerful with detailed transit information in Maps, a redesigned Notes app, and an all-new News app. And improvements at the foundation of the operating system enhance performance, improve security and give you up to an hour of extra battery life.

The operating system’s biggest focus is on intelligence and proactivity, letting iOS devices learn user habits and act on that information, opening apps before we need them, making recommendations on places we might like, and guiding us through each day with new Siri and search features.

Many built-in apps have been improved, including Notes, Mail, and Maps, wihch has gained Transit directions. Apple Pay has been renamed to Wallet, and for the first time, iOS 9 brings split-screen multitasking features to the iPad.

In addition to these consumer-facing features, iOS 9 introduces significant under-the-hood improvements that will free up storage space and improve battery life. With battery optimizations, iOS devices have an additional hour of battery life, and a new Low Power mode can extend battery even further.

iOS updates take up less space in iOS 9, letting even devices with little storage space upgrade, and many app install sizes are smaller due to a feature called app thinning.
