NBN Co reveals 58 percent of HFC network still unserviceable

NBN Co has revealed that 58 percent of its hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) footprint remains unserviceable, seven months after the sales freeze on connections was lifted.

The network builder said that as of November 16 there were still 1,192,965 premises in the HFC footprint whose connections were classed as unserviceable.

NBN Co froze HFC sales between December 11 last year and late April this year so it could remediate parts of the network and improve performance. It kept rolling out more HFC despite not being able to sell any.

NBN Co technicians missed 430 appointments a day

NBN Co’s technicians missed an average of 430 appointments a day in the year to June 30 this year.

The company revealed today that while 91 percent of appointments during the last financial year “were not missed, the total number of missed technician appointments for the period 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018 was 157,268.”

NBN Co classes a missed appointment as that where a technician failed to attend a premises within the agreed appointment window,

The number on missed appointments provides some idea for how much NBN Co could be up for under a new regime, where it must pay $25 for every no-show, late connection or fault.

On missed appointments alone, NBN Co would have faced $4 million in rebates during the past financial year.

Word processor pioneer Evelyn Berezin dies aged 93

The woman who created and sold what many recognise as the world’s first word processor has died aged 93.

Evelyn Berezin called the device the Data Secretary when, in 1971, her company Redactron launched the product.

She grew Redactron from nine employees to close to 500 and was named one of the US’s top leaders by BusinessWeek magazine in the year she sold it, 1976.

Ms Berezin helped pioneer other types of special-purpose computing including:

  • an automated banking system
  • a weapons-targeting calculator for the US Defense Department
  • terminals for a horse-racing track that monitored how much money was being bet on each animal

One of the remaining Data Secretary word processors can be seen on display at the

Computer History Museum in California.

The original model lacked a monitor,But later versions of the Data Secretary did include a screen

Her machine – which stood about 1m (3ft 3in) tall – featured a keyboard, cassette drives, control electronics and a printer.

It could record and play back what the user had typed, allowing it to be edited or reprinted.

Google Finally Gives Up The Duck

Solidifying its powerful monopoly on duck-related online content, the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo is now the proud owner of duck.com. The development comes after Google finally relented in an age-old dispute.

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that draws on search results from hundreds of sources and doesn’t create profiles for user data and shows everyone the same search results

it’s currently fielding about 25 million direct search queries a day. It’s still no threat to Google, however, which runs about 3.5 billion queries each day

In 2009, Google purchased On2, a company that specialised in video bandwidth reduction. On2 was previously known as the Duck Corporation and owned the Duck domain name, so Google acquired that in the purchase, as well. DuckDuckGo launched a year prior to that sale and its lust for the duck.com domain wasn’t so much about it being incredibly popular, but rather that the domain redirected to Google. DuckDuckGo has said that the situation “consistently confuses” users.

Google has agreed with DuckDuckGo, Inc. to transfer ownership and rights of the duck.com domain to DuckDuckG
