Cutting the cord to flat-screen TVs
- At least three companies expected to unveil wireless HD gadgets at CES

The WirelessHD group is also announcing that it has completed the blueprints for chips that can beam HD audio and video from set-top boxes, DVD players and digital cameras to TV sets. The chips can be made small, and the intention is to have them built into devices, rather than be supplied in add-on adapters.
The technology uses a virgin band of the radio spectrum, around 60 gigahertz. That lets it avoid interference from other wireless networking gear and allows for extremely high data transfer rates, according to John Marshall, chairman of WirelessHD. Unlike other wireless TV solutions, WirelessHD won't need to compress the signal, which can result in a loss of quality.
To satisfy concerns by the Motion Picture Association of America, the organization of Hollywood studios, WirelessHD has intentionally limited the range of the technology..
"What WirelessHD has done is that we've made sure that the technology can cover a whole room — even a large room, up to 10 meters (30 feet) — but we've used techniques that make sure that it can't leak into the apartment next door," a spokesman said

Apple Inc. is preparing to announce next month the long-rumored launch of a movie rental service through its online iTunes Store, as well as a groundbreaking licensing deal of its anti-piracy technology — moves that could dramatically boost the appeal of digital movie distribution.

According to a new international privacy report, governments around the world are increasingly invading the privacy of citizens with surveillance, identification systems and archiving of private data — and Australia is no exception.
Australia is far from having a good record with privacy, achieving the second lowest ranking band — "systematic failure to uphold safeguards". Reasons for the ranking included data breaches occurring in organisations such as the tax office, child support agency, and even amongst the police; expanded surveillance powers; and de-identified medical data being approved by the Privacy Commissioner for sale to pharmaceutical companies, the report said.

Government seeks expert advice on fibre rollout
The government has put out a tender for technical advice to help assess private sector proposals for the rollout of its national fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) network.
The network is scheduled to provide broadband services of at least 12Mbps to 98 percent of the Australian population and will entail an injection of public funds of up to AU$4.7 billion.
Work with the Department will start immediately — tenders close 29 January — and will run for the whole of 2008, although the Department reserves the right to the advisor's services up until the end of December 2009.
The move to obtain a technical advisor follows Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy saying last month that the government aims to have tenders for the rollout of the network awarded by mid 2008.
