Victoria Police arrest man over telco DDOS attack
The 34-year-old was arrested in the outer Melbourne suburb of Ringwood on Tuesday following a cyber crime investigation by detectives from Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police.
In a brief statement, Victoria Police said the alleged attacks were conducted “against a telecommunications business and a large shopping complex between June and October this year”.
a similar joint operation between Victoria Police and the AFP in July that netted two men allegedly responsible for a large-scale DDoS attack on police phone systems last year.
Last month, Victoria and NSW were found to have the highest incidence of cyber crime in Australia, responsible for 26 percent and 25 percent of all reports received by the Australian Cyber Security Centre since July.
AWS hit by DDoS attack dragging half of web down
The company Wednesday morning said it’s investigating reports of intermittent Domain Name System (DNS) resolution errors with Route 53 and its external DNS providers. The errors have since been resolved
AWS Support also said the DNS resolution issues affected other AWS service endpoints like ELB, RDS and EC2 that require public DNS resolution.
Netflix angers film-makers with ‘insulting’ speed-up function
Netflix has come in for criticism from film-makers over a new feature that allows viewers to speed up or slow down its programmes and movies.
The function, which is still on trial, allows mobile users to watch its content at various different speeds.
Netflix said This last test has generated a fair amount of feedback – both for and against. This is a mobile only test and gives people the ability to vary the speed at which they watch on phones or tablets…
“It’s a feature that has long been available on DVD players – and has been frequently requested by our members. For example, people looking to rewatch their favourite scene or wanting to go slower because it’s a foreign language title.”
iPhone 5 users risk losing internet access
users who did not download iOS 10.3.4 by 3 November would be locked out of features that rely on the correct time and date.
This includes the App Store, email, web browsing and storage service iCloud.
While it is not the latest version of the operating system, it is the most up-to-date available for the model.
Users of older iPhones have also been advised to update their software in order to maintain accurate GPS location services.
The software can be updated wirelessly or by using a computer, before 3 November.
After this, owners will need to connect their device to a Mac or PC, because wireless updates will no longer work.

- NVIDIA has introduced new versions of its SHIELD TV set-top-boxes featuring an all-new design as well as based on an improved Tegra X1+ SoC. The new STBs support all the features its predecessors do and add support for Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos audio, as well as a new AI-powered upscale algorithm.. Just note it doesn’t come with the game controller.
- The new NVIDIA SHIELD TV is said to be 25% faster to the original one launched over four years ago. The chip essentially has the same feature set and has the same Maxwell graphics onboard, so games developed with the original SoC in mind will work with the new one without any problems.
- The new Shield is comes with 2 GB of RAM (down from the previous one of 3 GB) as well as 8 GB of NAND flash storage (down from 16 GB previously), but the standard Shield can be expanded using a microSD card.
- Theres is a SHIELD Pro Version which has 3 GB of RAM as well as 16 GB of NAND storage onboard, but no longer has a hard drive.
- NVIDIA made its new SHIELD TV smaller than the predecessor in a bid to better compete against compact streaming media device, such as Google’s Chromecast/Chromecast Ultra. From connectivity standpoint, it features Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, a GbE port, an HDMI 2.0b output with HDCP 2.2, and a microSD card slot…. but it no longer has the USB 3.0 ports.. Those who need USB 3.0 should buy the SHIELD Pro with two USB Type-A ports.
- This Nvidia Shield TV comes with AI upscaling feature too, which upscales your pictures from 1080p to 4k , does not work on everything but some things it can do. - Within a few weeks, Intel is set to launch its most daring consumer desktop processor yet: the Core i9-9900KS, which offers eight cores all running at 5.0 GHZ… There’s going to be a lot of buzz about this processor, but what people don’t know is that Intel already has an all 5.0 GHz processor, and it actually has 14 cores: the Core i9-9990XE. This ultra-rare thing isn’t sold to consumers – Intel only sells it to select partners, and even then it is only sold via an auction, once per quarter, with no warranty from Intel.
- The New Core i9-9990XE is the pinnacle of Intel’s 14nm process, binned to such an nth of a degree that Intel can neither guarantee how many it can produce nor support it in any way, shape or fashion. Unlike other mass market processors, there is no product support for this thing, there’s no such thing as ‘EOL’ – once you win it at auction it’s a sunk cost to that buyer. The idea is to sell it on for a premium.

A Melbourne startup is building a fleet of autonomous submarines to create a Google Street View for the ocean floor

- Melbourne startup UAM Tec has unveiled its first product, an underwater submarine which uses artificial intelligence and an array of sensors and cameras to map the ocean floor.
- The company wants to create the underwater version of Google Maps Street View – which it calls “WaterView”
- – allowing anyone to poke around on the seafloor.
- The UAM’s first mission will be to the ports and bays around Melbourne.
- According to UAM Tec, the subs can travel 100km at a depth of 200m, taking 360 degree imagery with an array of 22 cameras, with a battery life of 40 hours. That depth restriction is artificially imposed for safety – the company told Business Insider Australia they can and eventually will go at least a kilometre underwater.
